XpanderSetup.exe Install Package The PC file XpanderSetup.exe is a self-extracting archive containing an install package that works with Microsoft ActiveSync to install Math Xpander on a Pocket PC device. Supported processors include sh3 and MIPS, found on the HP Jornada 540 series and Compaq Aero 1500 series Pocket PC devices, respectively. What it Does When you execute XpanderSetup.exe, it will do the following: 1. Extract the archive into a PC directory (C:\Program Files\Xpander\ by default). If an existing version is detected in the selected directory on the PC, it will be uninstalled. Running XpanderSetup.exe again will install the new version. 2. Attempt to install Math Xpander over an ActiveSync connection. If there is no ActiveSync connection, then Math Xpander will be installed on the Pocket PC upon the next connection. Step-By-Step Instructions 1. Make sure that you have ActiveSync installed on your PC. 2. Connect your Pocket PC device to your desktop or laptop PC, using a serial cable, infrared connection, USB connector, or network connection, as appropriate. 3. Launch ActiveSync if it doesn't start automatically. 4. Once a connection is established between the Pocket PC and the ActiveSync service on the PC, run the XpanderSetup.exe installation program that you downloaded from the Saltire web site. 5. The archive is extracted. Follow the on-screen prompts. Choose a destination folder (use the default folder on the PC unless you have a good reason not to). 6. Once the archive is finished extracting, the Math Xpander software is installed on the Pocket PC through the ActiveSync connection. Follow the on-screen prompts. Choose a destination folder for the installation of Math Xpander. Installation will take several minutes. 7. Launch Math Xpander by tapping on its icon in the Programs menu. See the PDF User's Guide for more information on using Math Xpander. 8. To Uninstall Math Xpander from your Pocket PC, exit from Math Xpander, do a hard reset of your Pocket PC device (usually by pressing a recessed button on the back of the Pocket PC device), go to the Settings...System menu, choose Remove Program, and select Math Xpander. The hard reset is necessary to fully deactivate MathKeypad.dll. Note: Users who have an earlier beta version of Math Xpander on their Pocket PC device may encounter problems with the MathKeypad.dll file during installation on the Pocket PC device. Should this occur, use the Explore command in ActiveSync to find and delete the MathKeypad.dll file from the Windows folder in the Pocket PC device, and then re-install Math Xpander. When you execute XpanderSetup.exe a second time, it will recognize the earlier version on the PC and uninstall it. Run XpanderSetup.exe again to extract the archive and install Math Xpander. Installation should proceed normally once the MathKeypad.dll file has been deleted. Installing Math Xpander on the Pocket PC device will do the following: Create a Math Xpander icon in the Programs folder. Install the Math Xpander help files. Copy regsvrce.exe to the Pocket PC. This program is used to make the math keypad available when Math Xpander is running on the Pocket PC. Other Downloads e-Lessons Also available for download from the Saltire site are two electronic lessons (e-Lessons). These are available in ZIP format, and must be individually extracted and installed on the Pocket PC device using ActiveSync. After downloading the e-lessons ZIP file, extract the archive into a folder on the PC. Attach your Pocket PC device to the PC and launch ActiveSync. Use the Explore command to browse to the Windows\Start Menu\ directory on the Pocket PC. Then select all the files from the archive and drag them into the Start Menu pane in ActiveSync. ActiveSync will prompt you to convert the files to a Pocket PC format. Accept this, and the e-Lessons will be copied. The e-Lessons will appear on the Start menu on your Pocket PC. Note that the Function Composition e-Lesson (unlike the Periodic Table) has ten application extension (dll) files that must be copied, in addition to the FunctionComp.exe file PC Emulation You must have Windows NT or Windows 2000 running on your PC to use the PC emulation version of Xpander. You also must download and install Microsoft eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0 from Microsoft's web site. This is a large archive (304 MB). Once you've installed the embedded Visual Tools, download and extract the PC emulation binaries from the Saltire web site into the emulator's windows\start menu\ folder on you PC. This will be C:\Windows CE Tools\wce300\MS Pocket PC\emulation\palm300\windows\start menu if you chose the default destination folder during installation of the tools. There are two files you must move for the emulator to work. These are MathKeyPad.dll and mfcce300d.dll. Copy them from the start menu folder up one level in the directory tree to the Windows folder. To launch the emulator, execute the command Shell32.exe in the ...\palm300\Windows folder. Once the emulator screen appears on your desktop, click on its Start menu and execute MathXpander.
